Madagascar Safaris

Overview

Madagascar split from Africa millions of years ago and drifted out into the Indian Ocean. Because of this isolation it developed its own unique world. Evolution took a different path here. Almost everything you see is found nowhere else on Earth.

It is often called the Eighth Continent. The landscape changes rapidly from rainforests in the east to dry deserts in the south. It is a place for nature lovers who want to see the weird and the wonderful. From the dancing sifakas to the tiny chameleons that fit on your fingertip this island is a treasure chest of biodiversity.

Land of Lemurs

There are no monkeys here. Instead there are lemurs. These wide eyed primates are the stars of the show. There are over 100 different species living in the forests.

In Andasibe you can hear the haunting call of the Indri which sounds like a whale song echoing through the mist. In the south you can walk with the famous ring tailed lemurs as they strut across the ground with their striped tails held high. They are curious and often unafraid of humans which allows for incredible encounters.

Avenue of the Baobabs

This is the most iconic view in Madagascar. Giant baobab trees line a dirt road near Morondava. Some of them are 800 years old. Their massive trunks and tiny branches look like roots sticking up into the sky.

At sunset the trees turn into black silhouettes against a purple and orange sky. It is a magical moment. The local people believe the baobabs house spirits and treat them with great respect. Walking beneath these giants makes you feel like you are in a fantasy novel.

Isalo National Park

Isalo looks like the American Wild West. It is a landscape of sandstone canyons and wind carved rocks. But hidden in the deep valleys are crystal clear pools surrounded by palm trees.

You can hike through the hot canyons and then swim in a cool natural pool. It is refreshing and beautiful. The park is also known for its sunsets. There is a special window in the rock that frames the setting sun perfectly. It is the ideal place to end a day of hiking with a cold drink.

Tsingy de Bemaraha

This is one of the strangest landscapes on the planet. The Tsingy is a forest of jagged limestone needles. The rock has been eroded by rain over millions of years into razor sharp spikes.

A series of rope bridges and walkways allows you to explore this stone maze. It requires a head for heights and a sense of adventure. You climb up ladders and cross swinging bridges with the grey spikes below you. It is challenging but the view from the top is unlike anything else you will ever see.

Beaches and Islands

Madagascar has 5000 kilometres of coastline. The beaches here are stunning. Nosy Be is the most famous island destination with warm water and great diving. You can swim with whale sharks here in the right season.

For something more remote try Île Sainte Marie. This was once a pirate stronghold. Now it is a quiet paradise where humpback whales come to breed. You can watch them breaching from the shore. The pace of life on the coast is slow. It follows the rule of "mora mora" which means slowly slowly.

Planning Your Trip

Travel in Madagascar requires patience. The roads can be rough and domestic flights can change. It is best to focus on one or two regions rather than trying to see the whole island.

We use private 4x4 vehicles and experienced drivers to make the journey comfortable. The accommodation ranges from simple eco lodges to luxury beach resorts. Come with an open mind and a sense of wonder and Madagascar will reward you with memories you cannot make anywhere else.
