Seychelles Beach Escape

Overview

Seychelles is paradise found. It is an archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean like gemstones. But these are not just flat sandbanks. These are granite islands with huge boulders that look like sculptures rising out of the turquoise sea.

This is the perfect place to end a safari. After the dust and early mornings of the bush, Seychelles offers clean air, warm water, and total relaxation. It is often called the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean because of its unique wildlife and pristine nature. Almost half of the land territory is protected.

Mahé Island

Mahé is the largest island and the entry point for most visitors. It is dominated by a ridge of lush green mountains that rise sharply from the sea.

You can hike through the Morne Seychellois National Park in the morning and swim in the ocean in the afternoon. The capital Victoria is one of the smallest capitals in the world. It has a busy market where you can buy fresh fish and spices. Mahé has some of the best resorts in the country but also quiet bays where you can be the only person on the beach.

Praslin and the Coco de Mer

A short flight or ferry ride takes you to Praslin. This island is famous for the Vallée de Mai. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a prehistoric palm forest that feels like a cathedral.

Here you find the Coco de Mer palm. It produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom which can weigh up to 30 kilograms. Legends once said this forest was the original Garden of Eden. Praslin is also home to Anse Lazio which is frequently voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

La Digue

Step back in time on La Digue. There are very few cars here. People get around by bicycle or ox cart. The pace of life is incredibly slow.

The island is home to Anse Source d'Argent. This is perhaps the most photographed beach on the planet. Huge granite boulders lie on the pink sand creating small coves and calm pools. The water is shallow and warm. It is the perfect place to snorkel or just float and forget about the world. You can cycle around the whole island in a day, stopping for fresh fruit juice at roadside stalls.

Wildlife and Nature

Seychelles is a sanctuary. On Bird Island millions of sooty terns nest every year. On Curieuse Island you can walk among giant tortoises that roam freely. Some of them are over 100 years old.

The underwater world is just as rich. The marine parks are filled with colourful fish and healthy coral. Hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beaches in broad daylight. The government is very strict about conservation so the environment here remains pristine.

Luxurious Seclusion

If you want total privacy Seychelles is the answer. There are private island resorts like North Island or Fregate where you have a whole villa to yourself.

The service is discreet and personal. You can have dinner on a private beach under the stars. Or a spa treatment in the forest. It is refined luxury that sits in harmony with nature.

When to Go

Seychelles is a year round destination. The temperature stays around 30 degrees Celsius all the time.

The seas are calmest in April and October during the change of the tradewinds. This is the best time for diving and snorkeling. From May to September the southeast trade winds bring a refreshing breeze which is great for sailing but can make some beaches choppy. No matter when you go you will find warm water and sunshine.
